Guide to the Best Things to Buy in August

Guide to the Best Things to Buy in August

It’s hard to admit that summer is almost over and kids from around the world are returning to school. This month you’ll find an interesting mix of deals and steals in this month’s guide to what to buy and what not to buy in August.

What to Buy Now

School Supplies. Kindergarteners to college students are heading back to school, so expect to find back-to-school supplies this month. Time.com listed school supplies as their number one deal this month. Staples’ back to school center offers some of the lowest prices backed by a “110% Lowest Price Guarantee.” If your child is in middle school or high school, don’t forget locker décor. Pottery Barn has a great selection of locker décor and supplies at 40% off.

Linens and Dorm Essentials. Whether you have a kid heading off to college or an elementary age child who just isn’t into dinosaurs anymore, this is the month to stock up on linens and room décor for kids of all ages. Plus, sales on linens are not just for kids! JC Penney and other major retailers are having white sales this month. Bed Bath & Beyond is ready to inspire with stylish room collections on sale and free shipping on over $29.

Summer Apparel. The official end of Summer isn’t here until late September, but you can still have a few weeks to take advantage of great deals on the season’s top styles before inventory runs low. Nordstrom Rack is offering 30-70% off on women’s dresses, and Dick's Sporting Goods is discounting select items by at least 60%. PacSun is offering 50% off on both women’s and men’s clothing and accessories. Saks is advertising its final sale of up to 75% off on women’s apparel; men’s and kid’s too.

What You Can Skip

Before you start shopping, you also need to know which deals you can skip this month. If you can be patient, you’ll find bigger and better discounts for these items in another month or two.

Toys. According to Nerdwallet, you should hold off on toy purchases this month.  According to their website “Microsoft will release its “sleeker, slimmer, sharper” Xbox One S 2TB console this month…but you’ll likely pay full price for it.” Steer clear of the early adopters and wait for sales on this and other tech toys on or near Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Shopping Tip: Set a calendar alert to check sales on this and other sites in October.

Fall Apparel. According to Offers.com, if you can hold off on sweater shopping until Black Friday, you’ll be able to save 30% or more on cardigans, pullovers, and other fall styles and even more if you can hold off until December and January, when most retailers offer fall apparel at up to 80% off retail.

Shopping tip: Visit your favorite retail website and add fall sweater must haves – like the gorgeous cashmere from J. Crew’s Cashmere Shop, to your wish list!

Collectibles. Whether your passion is collectible coins, vintage watches, or estate jewelry, you may want to take a pass this month and wait until the fourth quarter to make a purchase. The summer months typically leave sellers with low inventory, so it can pay to wait until inventories rise which can bring the pricing down. Right before Christmas seems to be the best time to buy, according to Right Time To Buy.

Shopping tip: Visit sites like Ebay regularly to scout the sellers who have high seller rating and specialize in what you love to collect.
